The deeper a crisis, the easier it is to project a huge victory over it. Vague words – constructive or not, collateral losses, shortcomings, gaps, contradictions and repeated back-and-forth moves, do not matter; the pedestal of success is built on top of them, and they are excluded from the debate.
Even most important elements, the reality of the crisis, its true size and its seriousness or stakes have no place in the public debate, while no one has the right to question their destructive potential. What defines the nature and dimensions of the crisis are the impressions that remain in the conscious and the subconscious. No one has put through a necessary forensic examination the ways and means applied in order to consolidate these impressions. Moreover, beyond the intentions and goals of power-holders, and their efforts to pass on their own narrative, the subjects had their own contribution.
Subjects cooperate, people surrender or seek refuge in instances of power, which, they think, are guarantors of their security. They will hardly accept that they went through a process, that what they accepted and established as truths were the result of a process of suggestion. The image in their minds cannot be unreal, it cannot be simply a made-up image to control them. Is there anyone who accepts that s/he is subject to or under control?
After all, big words are present, with their special, crushing weight: pandemic, war, invisible enemy, deadly danger, in the front line, vulnerable groups, ICUs, reference hospitals, covid19 cases, positive (with negative sign and weight!), death, and … “we will make it”. We will succeed, we will … survive!
Yes, we even heard that our survival relates also with the famous, the immortal Greek DNA, which, according to the President of the Republic is a guarantee for the victory of both, Cyprus and Greece. Yet, don’t look for answers to logical questions, like this one: Given our unwavering faith in our DNA, our impenetrable invincible shield, why we have been subjected to the harsh and inhumane measures, threats, incarceration, calls for restraint and punishment?
