The change in leadership, with Mehmet Ali Talat succeeding to Rauf Denktash in 2005, took place at a time where the omens were not very encouraging. The Republic of Cyprus was a member of the European Union since May 2004 without a solution to the Cyprus Problem and Turkish Cypriots felt cut off the European family with very limited prospects for a reunification of the island.
